Hi Everyone! My name is Melissa Cox and I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ as well as a College Planning and Student Loan Advisor with Fetterman Investments in Dallas, Texas. I am also a Registered Investment Advisor Representative through ISC Advisors.
Welcome to my brand new blog, Melissa Making Cents!
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas..Oak Cliff to be exact. The financial world wasn’t anywhere on my radar growing up. (I actually really wanted to be like my uncle, whom I was convinced was a geologist…). I just figured that it wasn’t for people that came from the same background I had, and as awful as this sounds… as a female it was never something I’d need to learn much about. I stumbled upon my career by chance and the more I learned and studied the more in love I became. It’s a chance I’m so very thankful for, and I’m blessed to have had so many awesome mentors along the way. I realized as a female, others that had my mindset would NEED my help. I KNEW I could make a difference, and from that point forward I focused on educating clients about financial literacy. Now I look at my daughter and realize more than ever it’s time to change that mindset.
Life can throw us curve balls!
In the 15 years that I have been in the financial world, I have seen many ups and downs with my clients. And I’m not just talking about the markets. I'm talking real life events that we all may experience at some time. Marriages, Divorces, Birth , Losing Parents or Children, Losing Jobs, and Retiring are just a few. The one thing I’ve come to recognize is that all we can do is prepare and hope for the best in some cases, because life loves to throw us some pretty major curve balls. I’ve laughed and cried with many clients, and in some cases simply allowed that time to just breathe.
Two major themes with money
There are two major money themes that I’ve noticed. First up, no one wants to talk about our finances for a multitude of reasons, but a huge reason is it’s a super emotional topic. The second reason being that a lot of us have never really been taught about our money. And you better believe I can look back at myself and point a finger at myself! Lord knows I’ve surely made some pretty big financial mistakes.
Money aha moments!
My goal is to help you get a better understanding of the financial world, and try to help you make some solid choices that can help your financial future. No doubt some topics will be hard to read or listen to, and some may be really boring. Let’s face it… the financial world is not always sexy! But sometimes learning the basics gives you a whole different perspective. It’s those “AHA” moments, I thrive for!
Educational information not stock picks
Now, just to let you know, I won't discuss specific stocks or make asset recommendations through this blog. The is mainly because we are all from different walks of life, and in most cases what’s good for the goose is not good for the gander. Otherwise known as, what’s good for me may not in fact be good for you!
There are a few topics that I'm very passionate about! /those are the topic I'll be writing about on this blog. If there is a topic you want me to address, use the link below to send me a message. And I can tell you…. there is no question too basic or “dumb”. More than likely someone else has the same question!
So, welcome to my blog! I look forward to providing my readers great educational information!
